house spokes person dana perino said, it's a sign that detroit continues to adopt and evolve and address the change in consumer tastes and attitudes. and i think that they're adapting well. that was seven months before president obama took the oath of office. the wheels were in motion. the wheels of bankruptcy were already in motion for the entire automobile industry, and there were no takers. general motors had cut 71,000 jobs since 2008. general motors had lost more than $54 billion since 2005. now, on november 18th, just several months after that quote from dana perino, mitt romney wrote infamously in the detroit free press, let detroit go bankrupt. in other words, let them die. the engine, one of the biggest engines of the united states economy was told, you're on your own. get out of here. the republicans still can't decide what they want to this day. ryan actually wanted the president to micromanage a plant that closed before he took office. at the same time, romney and other republicans wanted to liquidate the entire industry. >> it could have gone back more effectively and sooner

. it seems from outside ohio, the auto industry is everything there. not just detroit, ohio. what percentage of your workers, men and women, owe their jobs directly or indirectly to the success of the american auto industry? >> the center for automotive research in detroit said 850,000 jobs in a state of 11 million people, ohio, 850,000 jobs are connected directly or indirectly with autos. it's not just the plant that makes the chevy cruise in youngstown or the plant that assembles the jeep wrangler in liberty, in toledo, it's the supply chain, the auto dealers, the machinists and people that fix cars, the people that drive the trucks that move the car parts and the cars around. it's a zillion car parts manufacturers. the chevy cruise, for example, much is made in ohio from the glass -- or from the transmission to the wheels to the steel. one thing after another. it's clear that when we fought for the auto rescue, that that was all about jobs in ohio. that's really governor romney and my opponent's problem is they oppose the auto rescue. they don't quite know how to back off that. >> well, w

[cheers] i have worked with business leaders who are bringing jobs back to a america not because our workers make less pay but because we make better products. because we work harder and smarter than anybody else. i signed trade agreements that are helping companies sell more goods to millions of customers. goods stamped with three proud words "made in america." [cheers] [ crowd chanting "usa!"] after a decade of decline, this country created over half of a million of manufacturing jobs in the last two and a half years. now you have a choice. we can get more tax breaks to corporations to ship jobs overseas or reconsider rewarding companies that create new jobs and train new workers here in the united states of america.
